The era itself
On March 25, 1983, Michael Jackson stepped onto a Pasadena stage in a black sequined jacket and a single white glove, performed 'Billie Jean' for the Motown 25 anniversary television special, and at the end did a slow, weightless backward glide nobody in the audience had ever seen before. The world genuinely shifted that night.
An album built to break the color line on MTV
When Thriller was being made through 1982 at Westlake Studios in Los Angeles, MTV — launched the year before — was effectively a whites-only channel. Black artists were rarely played, and even Michael's earlier solo work hadn't cracked the rotation. Quincy Jones and Michael set out to make an album the channel couldn't ignore. Released November 30, 1982, Thriller delivered seven top-10 singles from a nine-track album, a feat no one had ever pulled off, and forced MTV to open its doors.
Billie Jean, Beat It and the rules they broke
'Billie Jean' had a bassline Michael wrote himself, sitting at the piano while driving on the freeway in his head; Quincy initially wanted to cut it. Michael refused. The video, directed by Steve Barron, became the first by a Black solo artist to enter heavy rotation on MTV. 'Beat It,' featuring an Eddie Van Halen guitar solo Eddie recorded for free in a single afternoon, married rock and R&B in a way American radio had been segregating for decades. Both reached #1.
The Thriller video changed what a music video could be
On December 2, 1983, MTV premiered the 14-minute John Landis short film for 'Thriller.' It cost roughly $500,000 — unheard of at the time — and was funded in part by selling the rights to a behind-the-scenes documentary called The Making of Thriller, which went on to become the best-selling music VHS ever. The choreography from the graveyard scene is still being learned and performed at weddings, flash mobs and Halloween parties in every country on earth, four decades later.

Thriller has sold an estimated 70+ million copies worldwide and is the best-selling album in recorded music history. It won eight Grammy Awards at the 1984 ceremony — including Album of the Year — a record that stood for decades. Michael was 25 years old.
