The era itself
By 1986 Michael Jackson was the most famous person on the planet, and everyone around him assumed his next album would play it safe. Instead he showed up in black leather, a buckle belt and fingerless gloves, looked the camera in the eye and dared the world to keep up.
The pressure of following Thriller
Bad was Michael's seventh studio album and the final one he would make with Quincy Jones. Recorded across 1986 and into 1987 at Westlake Studios, it carried impossible expectations — Thriller had sold tens of millions of copies, and the music industry quietly believed the follow-up would inevitably disappoint. Instead, Bad sold over 35 million copies, hit #1 in 25 countries, and became the first album in history to spawn five #1 Billboard Hot 100 singles.

The Bad World Tour rewrote the touring industry
Beginning September 12, 1987 in Tokyo and ending January 27, 1989 in Los Angeles, the Bad World Tour played 123 concerts across 15 countries to roughly 4.4 million fans. It set Guinness World Records for the largest grossing concert series and largest concert attendance at the time, including seven sold-out nights at Wembley Stadium in London — a record that earned Michael a personal congratulations from the Guinness organization. It was also the first time Michael toured as a solo artist.
