How the MJ Era Quiz Works: Questions, Scoring and What Your Result Means

The quiz uses the six solo studio albums Michael Jackson released as an adult on Epic: Off the Wall (1979), Thriller (1982), Bad (1987), Dangerous (1991), HIStory (1995) and Invincible (2001). Each album has a clear musical sound, visual style and set of themes, which makes them useful as 'personalities'. We left out the Motown solo albums and posthumous releases because they do not have the same distinct identity, and we cover them in articles instead.

For each album we listened to the whole record, looked at its singles, videos and live performances, and wrote down the recurring moods and themes. Off the Wall is joyful, social and dance-driven, so its personality is warm and feeling-first. Thriller is polished and theatrical, so its personality is magnetic and detail-obsessed. Bad is sharp and confrontational, so its personality is independent and bold. Dangerous is experimental and message-driven, so its personality is visionary. HIStory is outspoken and defensive, so its personality is truth-telling. Invincible is tender and romantic, so its personality is gentle and resilient.

These descriptions are our interpretation of the music. They are meant to help fans talk about which side of Jackson's work speaks to them. They are not claims about Michael Jackson's own personality at those times.

There are 12 questions, covering looks, dance moves, lyrics, videos, concerts and what the music means to you. Each question has several answers, and each answer is linked to exactly one era. For example, an answer about the white suit and crisp white socks of the Off the Wall period counts towards Off the Wall, while an answer about a sharp, leather-and-buckles look counts towards Bad.

We wrote the answers so that each one reflects its era's mood rather than just naming the album. That way the quiz rewards what you are drawn to, not how much trivia you know.

Scoring is simple and fully transparent. Every answer adds one point to its era. At the end, the era with the most points is your result. If two or more eras are tied, the quiz looks back through your answers from the last question to the first and picks the tied era you chose most recently. We use that rule because later questions (about what the music taught you, or which concert moment you would go back to) tend to be the most personal.

The quiz runs entirely in your browser. Your answers are not sent to us or stored on our servers, and you do not need to accept cookies to take it.

Your result tells you which era's mood most closely matches your answers. Each result page explains the era's history, its key songs, why your answers point there, and which era came second. We recommend reading the era guide for your result and listening to its signature tracks; that is where the quiz is most useful, as a starting point for exploring the music.
