A few MJ facts most fans don't know

  • He wrote 'We Are the World' in a single night with Lionel Richie

On January 21, 1985, Michael and Lionel Richie finished the song in one overnight session at Michael's home in Encino. It was recorded a week later by 46 of the biggest names in American music and has since raised more than $63 million for humanitarian aid.

  • The single sequined glove was hand-made by Michael himself

Michael told Ebony magazine in 2007 that he had been sewing rhinestones onto a white glove since the late 1970s because he wanted a single piece of stagewear that would catch every spotlight on stage. He debuted it during the Triumph Tour in 1981.

  • He bought a chimpanzee named Bubbles from a Texas research facility

Michael adopted Bubbles in 1983 from a cancer research lab, partly because he wanted to rescue him. Bubbles lived with Michael through the Bad era and is still alive today at the Center for Great Apes in Florida.

  • He once turned down the role of Professor X

Director Bryan Singer confirmed that Michael had lobbied to play Professor Charles Xavier in the first X-Men film (2000). The role ultimately went to Patrick Stewart, but Michael was a serious comic book and Marvel fan throughout his life.
