The Night Michael Won Eight Grammys: February 28, 1984

By February 1984 Thriller had been in the top ten of the Billboard 200 for more than a year and had produced six top-ten singles, with the title track about to become the seventh. The Thriller short film had premiered weeks earlier. A month before the ceremony, Jackson had been burned on the scalp during the filming of a Pepsi commercial in Los Angeles, and he was recovering during the weeks before the show.

The ceremony was hosted by John Denver. Jackson attended with the actor Brooke Shields and wore a military-style sequined jacket and sunglasses.

Several other people won Grammys for work on Thriller that night, including engineer Bruce Swedien, who won Best Engineered Recording (Non-Classical).

Jackson wore sunglasses for most of the evening. When he accepted one of his later awards he took them off, telling the audience that he was doing so for Katharine Hepburn, who had encouraged him to take them off. The moment is often replayed because it was a rare glimpse of him speaking informally on stage.

Eight Grammys in a single night was a record. Santana tied it in 2000 for Supernatural. Jackson's career total of competitive Grammys is usually given as 13, and he also received the Grammy Legend Award in 1993 and a posthumous Lifetime Achievement Award in 2010.
